Supreme Champion title goes to New Zealand alpaca at first-ever Alpaca Show at Countryside Live

A former intensive-care nurse turned alpaca breeder took the Championship title and trophy at the first-ever Yorkshire Alpaca Group Show held on the opening day of Countryside Live.

Barbara Hetherington of Beck Brow Alpacas, at Carlisle, Cumbria, bought four alpacas as pets in 2008 and the following year handed in her notice as a nurse to concentrate on her animals.

Mrs Hetherington now has 160 alpacas – and Gilt Edge Samurai, a two-year-old New Zealand born animal, took the Supreme Huacaya Championship title at the rural showcase.

“Alpacas are really addictive, they are all very individual and have a very strong family bond. We bought Sam over from New Zealand in June 2015 – we’re delighted, and his breeder in New Zealand will be too,” she said.
